How to Print a Canva Design as a Booklet
Learn why exporting directly from Canva often leads to out-of-order pages when printing double-sided, and how to create a flawless folded saddle-stitch booklet for free in seconds.
How to Print a Canva Design as a Booklet
Export your Canva design as "PDF Print" (not PDF Standard), then run it through a booklet imposition tool to rearrange pages into 2-up saddle-stitch order. Canva exports pages sequentially — without imposition, folding the printed sheets produces scrambled page numbers. Use a free tool like PDF to Booklet to impose automatically.
Why Canva Doesn't Print Folded Booklets Out of the Box
Canva is one of the world's most popular design tools for event programs, church bulletins, portfolios, catalogs, and zines. However, when you download your multi-page project from Canva, it exports pages in sequential reading order (Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
If you send that raw PDF to your home or office printer using 2-sided printing, your printer puts Page 1 & Page 2 on Sheet 1, Page 3 & Page 4 on Sheet 2, and so on. When you fold the stack in half, the page numbers will be completely scrambled (e.g. Page 1 sits next to Page 2 instead of the back cover).
To print a physical folded booklet, your document must undergo prepress imposition. For an 8-page booklet, Sheet 1 Front must contain Page 8 (Back Cover) and Page 1 (Front Cover) side-by-side. PDF to Booklet handles this entire calculation automatically.
Step-by-Step: From Canva to Physical Booklet
Design in Canva with the "Multiple of 4" Rule
Every standard sheet of paper folded in half creates 4 booklet pages (Front-left, Front-right, Back-left, Back-right). Make sure your Canva document's total page count is a multiple of 4 (e.g. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, or 32 pages).
Export as "PDF Print" (Highest Quality)
In Canva, click Share → Download and choose the following settings:
Gives crisp 300 DPI vectors & high-res images.
CMYK for print shops; RGB is fine for home inkjets.
Leave unchecked unless doing commercial bleeds.
Impose in PDF to Booklet (Zero Uploads)

Print with "Flip on Short Edge" (Crucial)
Open your newly downloaded imposed PDF in Adobe Acrobat, Apple Preview, or Chrome Print dialog:
Fold, Align, and Saddle-Staple
Take the printed stack out of your printer tray. Fold all sheets together down the center vertical axis. Use a booklet stapler or long-reach stapler to place 2 staples along the center fold.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the back pages printing upside down?
This happens when your printer is set to "Flip on Long Edge" instead of "Flip on Short Edge". Since booklet sheets are printed in landscape orientation, flipping on the long edge rotates the reverse side upside down. In PDF to Booklet, you can also toggle "Duplex Short Edge Rotation" to pre-rotate the backs.
Can I make an A5 booklet using standard A4 paper?
Yes! When you design standard A5 pages in Canva and export as PDF, imposing them onto A4 Landscape paper will put two A5 pages on each side of the A4 sheet. Folding the A4 sheet in half creates a perfect A5 booklet.
