Zine Making & DIY Publishing

How to Make & Print a Zine from PDF

A complete guide to self-publishing zines: from classic 8-page one-sheet mini zines to multi-page saddle-stitch booklets. Learn pagination math, paper stocks, and binding techniques.

How to Make a Zine from PDF

There are two common zine formats: a single-sheet 8-page mini zine (one sheet folded and cut), or a multi-sheet saddle-stitched zine (multiple sheets folded, nested, and stapled). For saddle-stitch zines, impose your PDF into 2-up booklet order with a free tool, print double-sided, fold in half, and staple the spine.

Choosing the Right Zine Format

Zines (short for fanzines or magazines) are non-commercial, self-published booklets created by artists, writers, activists, and enthusiasts. There are two primary formats for DIY zine printing:

1-Sheet Fold 8 Pages

8-Page Mini Zine (No Staples)

Made from a single sheet of US Letter or A4 paper. It is folded into 8 grid cells, cut down the middle center slit, and folded into an 8-page pocket booklet without requiring staples or glue.

Best For: Micro-comics, poetry snippets, quick flyers, pocket manuals.
Multi-Sheet Booklet 12, 16, 24, 32+ Pages

Folded Saddle-Stitch Zine

Made by nesting multiple folded sheets (e.g. 4 sheets folded = 16 pages) and securing along the spine with staples or thread. Delivers a professional, durable magazine feel.

Best For: Photo books, essays, fiction, art catalogs, community zines.

How to Print a Multi-Page Saddle-Stitch Zine

1

Set Up Your Target Page Size in Sequential Order

Design your zine in Canva, InDesign, Affinity Publisher, Word, or Scribus as single portrait pages (e.g. Half-Letter 5.5" × 8.5" or standard A5 148 × 210mm).

  • Page 1: Front Cover
  • Page 2: Inside Front Cover
  • Pages 3 to N-1: Main Body Content
  • Page N: Back Cover
2

Check Total Pages (Divisible by 4)

Because each folded physical sheet holds 4 pages (2 on front, 2 on back), your total page count must be 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, or 32 pages. If you have an odd number like 14 pages, add 2 blank or art sketch pages at the back.

3

Automate Sheet Imposition with PDF to Booklet

Upload your sequential PDF to PDF to Booklet. The engine calculates the printer spreads instantly:

Sheet 1 Front: [ Page 16 (Back) | Page 1 (Front Cover) ]
Sheet 1 Back: [ Page 2 (Inside Front) | Page 15 (Inside Back) ]
Sheet 2 Front: [ Page 14 | Page 3 ] ... and so forth.
4

Print Double-Sided (Flip on Short Edge)

Download your imposed PDF file and print it on standard Letter or A4 paper. Always configure your printer driver to Flip on Short Edge (2-Sided Landscape).

Paper Selection & Binding Techniques

Recommended Paper Stocks

  • Standard Interior: 24# (90 GSM) or 28# (105 GSM) smooth text paper prevents ink show-through (ghosting).
  • Heavy Cover: 65# to 80# cover stock (175 - 215 GSM) gives a sturdy, tactile outer jacket.
  • Budget / Punk Zine: Standard 20# copy paper or recycled newsprint for authentic gritty vibes.

Binding Tools & Methods

  • Long-Arm Stapler: A $15-$25 swivel or 12" long-reach stapler reaches right to the center spine.
  • Pamphlet Stitch (Thread): Punch 3 holes along the fold with an awl and bind using embroidery floss or waxed linen thread.
  • Bone Folder: A plastic or bone crease tool to make crisp, flat spine folds without tearing paper fibers.

Dealing with Spine Creep in 24+ Page Zines

When you nest 6 or more sheets together (24 to 48 pages), the inner sheets are pushed outwards by the bulk of the folded spine. This phenomenon is known as booklet creep. If uncompensated, the outer margins of the innermost pages will be trimmed narrower than the cover.
