How to Arrange PDF Pages for Booklet Printing

Learn how to arrange PDF pages correctly for booklet printing, including page order, automated prepress imposition, blank page padding, and double-sided duplex printer setup.

How to Arrange PDF Pages for Booklet Printing

Keep your PDF in normal sequential reading order (1, 2, 3, 4...) — do not manually rearrange pages into spreads. A booklet imposition tool automatically pairs pages into the correct 2-up saddle-stitch order (e.g., for an 8-page booklet: Sheet 1 front = pages 8 & 1, Sheet 1 back = pages 2 & 7). Let software handle the math.

1 Keep Your PDF in Normal Page Order

Always keep your source document in standard, sequential reading order:

Page 1 → Page 2 → Page 3 → Page 4 → Page 5 → Page 6 → Page 7 → Page 8...

Do not manually rearrange the pages into booklet spreads in Canva, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or InDesign. The booklet-making tool will calculate and generate the exact physical printer spreads for you automatically.

2 Check Your Page Count (The Rule of 4)

Because a single sheet of paper folded in half creates 4 distinct booklet pages (Front-Left, Front-Right, Back-Left, Back-Right), a saddle-stitched folded booklet must always have a total page count that is a multiple of 4:

8 Pages (2 Sheets)
12 Pages (3 Sheets)
16 Pages (4 Sheets)
20 Pages (5 Sheets)

If your PDF has 14 pages, you need to add 2 blank pages to create a complete 16-page booklet.

3 Arrange the Pages Automatically (Imposition)

Booklet imposition rearranges your PDF pages so that after printing double-sided and folding the sheets down the middle, all pages appear in the correct sequential reading order.

For example, an 8-page booklet arranges sheets into the following layout:

Sheet 1 Front: [ Page 8 (Back Cover) | Page 1 (Front Cover) ]
Sheet 1 Back: [ Page 2 (Inside Front) | Page 7 (Inside Back) ]
Sheet 2 Front: [ Page 6 | Page 3 ]
Sheet 2 Back: [ Page 4 | Page 5 (Center Spread) ]

Instead of calculating these page pairs manually and risking costly misprints, upload your PDF directly to our booklet maker tool.

4 Print Your Imposed PDF Double-Sided

After downloading your newly imposed booklet PDF, open your print dialog and configure double-sided duplex printing:

Duplex Setting: Flip on Short Edge
Page Sizing / Scale: 100% or "Fit to Printable Area"
Paper Orientation: Landscape

💡 Pro Tip: Always print one test sheet first to verify that the reverse side isn't upside down. If your printer only supports long-edge flipping, enable "Duplex Short Edge Rotation" in our tool before exporting.

5 Fold and Check Your Booklet

Once all sheets are printed:

  1. Stack the sheets: Keep them in the exact order they came out of the printer (Sheet 1 on top, followed by Sheet 2, Sheet 3...).
  2. Fold in half: Crease the entire stack down the center vertical fold.
  3. Verify reading order: Flip through from Page 1 to the back cover to confirm smooth continuous pagination.
  4. Staple along spine: Apply two staples along the center fold using a booklet stapler, long-arm stapler, or pamphlet stitch thread.
