Booklet Page Count Rules: Multiple of 4 Explained
Why saddle-stitch booklets must always have a total page count divisible by 4, how sheet imposition works, and where to place blank padding pages for a clean professional finish.
The Golden Rule of Saddle-Stitch Booklet Making
All saddle-stitched booklets must have a total page count that is a multiple of 4 (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40...). One physical flat sheet folded in half down the center crease creates 2 leaves and 4 distinct printable pages. It is physically impossible to have an odd or indivisible number of pages without blank padding.
The Geometry of a Single Folded Sheet

When you take a single flat sheet of paper (such as US Letter or standard A4) and fold it in half, you create:
Each additional nested sheet adds exactly 4 more pages. Therefore, documents with 10, 14, 18, or 22 pages require blank pages to be inserted during prepress imposition to reach the nearest multiple of 4 (12, 16, 20, or 24 pages).
Binding Methods vs. Page Count Rules
| Binding Style | Page Count Rule | Page Limits | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saddle-Stitch (Folded & Stapled) | Multiple of 4 | 4 to 64 pages | Zines, event programs, booklets, church bulletins |
| Perfect Bound (Glued Spine) | Multiple of 2 | 40 to 500+ pages | Paperback books, thick annual reports, product catalogs |
| Spiral / Wire-O Binding | Multiple of 2 | 8 to 250+ pages | Cookbooks, technical manuals, desk calendars, notebooks |
Strategic Blank Page Placement
When padding a 14-page document to 16 pages, deciding where to position the 2 blank pages is critical for document flow:
Inside Covers (Prepress Standard)
Place blank pages at Page 2 (Inside Front Cover) and Page 15 (Inside Back Cover). This creates a polished corporate brochure feel where content begins on the first right-hand page.
End of Booklet (Notes & Contact)
Place blank pages at the very back before the final cover. This is ideal for workbooks, event programs, and conference manuals that include dedicated "Notes" sections.
What Happens with 32+ Page Booklets? (Creep)
As page count rises above 24 to 32 pages, the physical thickness of nested sheets causes innermost pages to stick out past the outer cover. This is called spine creep.
